Beyond the basic needs the children of the orphanage were overwhelmed and excited when they received their new soccer balls and uniforms. We are currently raising funds to finish construction of the larger orphanage so that more children can be helped.

In mid January 2015 the most recent container arrived in Kahama. It was filled with clothing, shoes, sportswear, medical supplies, educational and construction material, and more.

Missions Fest 2015 http://new.gemscanada.ca/2015/02/missions-fest-2015/ http://new.gemscanada.ca/2015/02/missions-fest-2015/#respond Sun, 15 Feb 2015 23:39:47 +0000 http://new.gemscanada.ca/?p=749 Indi missionsfest

For the first time in our history, GEMS had a booth at Missions Fest.  It was great to meet so many friends and to build new relationships.  Thank you to everyone who stopped by to see us in the exhibition hall.  Missions Fest has more than 35,000 people attend every year and 250 exhibitors share their work.  It was exciting and yet humbling  to be part of what God is doing worldwide and to know that we play a part in His overall plan.  We look forward to the great things that will happen this year as we join hands with God’s people and we hope to see everyone again at Missions Fest in 2016.

Report from Daniel Sladariu – Romania http://new.gemscanada.ca/2015/02/report-from-daniel-sladariu-romania/ http://new.gemscanada.ca/2015/02/report-from-daniel-sladariu-romania/#respond Wed, 11 Feb 2015 22:53:33 +0000 http://new.gemscanada.ca/?p=745 We received a report from Daniel Sladariu in Romania of a container that GEMS sent from the Langley depot to Ploiestei Romania.  The container was received in 2014 by Dan Sladariu of Fundatia Samanteanul Milos Foundation.

“We have been busy this two weeks unloading & distributing the container. In the town of Plopeni, the Senior’s Home which we are Partners with received enough soup mix to last them one year. Boldesti Gypsy village. These people are very poor. Seventy five children are being fed a good meal each school day, and their grades are improving as a result of not being too hungry to pay attention! Very much thanks to you and appreciation for what you are doing for their village!

Valeni de Munte village received a big share of supplies. There are many large and poor families there. The Baptists who have an orphanage with fifty abandoned children are so grateful that you are helping them every month to feed all the hungry mouths, and clothe these dear children. This work has been going for several years and is made possible by your supplies of food, clothing, medicines, educational materials and many other goods.

Alin Panea – director of the Broshten Orphanage of 100 children is our Partner. They received some supplies from another charity, and shared nearly a ton of rice with us. Thus, we are able to include rice, vegetable, & meat with our daily meals for multitudes of very needy children!

Marcel – Director of Our Home for Abandoned Senior’s says a special thanks for the woolen, knitted slippers!

What a blessing for these seniors to have warm feet!”

Thrilled Romanians Receive Food and Supplies http://new.gemscanada.ca/2015/02/733/ http://new.gemscanada.ca/2015/02/733/#respond Tue, 10 Feb 2015 05:05:53 +0000 http://new.gemscanada.ca/?p=733 Smiling-childrenIt is hard to express the joy of seeing the smiling faces of children who have received a hot meal where there is not much else for them to smile about.
Last September we sent a container from our Langley depot to help an orphanage in Romania. The children were not the only ones to be blessed with warm food and clothing, seniors and many others benefited from this shipment
The container arrived in time to distribute the warm clothing before the on set of very cold weather. It came to the town of Ploiesti, Romania; this is about half hour drive north of the capital city Bucharest. From there it was distributed to several communities in the area for seniors homes, orphanages, hospitals, homeless and to families in need.
This container is part of an ongoing effort in the area by GEMS through several ministries to bring relief to the motherless and the widows, seeing to the needs of those that have very little.

Food and Clothing for Romania http://new.gemscanada.ca/2014/08/food-and-clothing-for-romania/ http://new.gemscanada.ca/2014/08/food-and-clothing-for-romania/#respond Thu, 28 Aug 2014 04:55:01 +0000 http://new.gemscanada.ca/?p=728 A container was loaded today destined for Ploiesti Romania. The soup mix that arrived earlier from the Prairie Gleaners will make approximately 320,000 servings of nutritious soup. Also included are; many ski outfits donated from Whistler-Blackcomb Ski Resort, 15,000 pounds of winter clothing and blankets, sewing machines and sewing supplies, furniture, a piano, and 15 bicycles.
The container is expected to arrive at the end of October and will be received by our agent in Romania Daniel Sladariu and distributed throughout the region. Many seniors in this area live in very poor conditions often in nothing more than a steel clad shack. They often go hungry and cold because there is little government support for them. There are also several orphanages in the area that will receive much needed warm clothing and food.
This is one container in an ongoing effort to bring relief to the people of Romania; in the months to come we will send more. Please consider how you can help us either by donation of good quality used and new clothing or a financial donation.

Philippines Crisis http://new.gemscanada.ca/2013/11/philippines-crisis/ http://new.gemscanada.ca/2013/11/philippines-crisis/#respond Fri, 15 Nov 2013 05:48:33 +0000 http://new.gemscanada.ca/?p=716 We have been able to reach our contact in the Philippines by phone this week. Pastor Chirs Barrios lives in Manila but his family is from one of the hardest hit cities, Tacloban. With the death toll in the country there are not many people who have not been affected with the loss of family members; Pastor Chirs is no exception. It is with great sorrow that we report he has lost 13 family members in the disaster.

He is currently in Tacloban to assist the remaining family members and to help others where he can. We have received an urgent request from Pastor Chris for aid. These are people who have lost everything and are in great sorrow. We are collecting money to send to Pastor Chris for immediate needs and we are also working on a container to send in the next few weeks. Keep in mind that the Government of Canada has pledged to give dollar for dollar for every donation received before December 9, 2013.

We need blankets, non-pershiable food items, construction material, construction tools, personal care items (soap, shampoo, toothpaste/toothbrushes, diapers etc.) The fees of shipping a container to the Philippines is $25,000.00. This includes shipping it to the Philippians, moving it to the final destination, Tacloban and to aquire the needed items to fill the container. Our intention is to send several containers in the coming months, our immediate need is for money to make this all happen. We have provided an option on the web site to donate and you can send a checque or money order to GEMS 2870 Crossley Drive, Abbotsford BC V2T 5H3.

Container for Nicaragua http://new.gemscanada.ca/2013/11/container-for-nicaragua/ http://new.gemscanada.ca/2013/11/container-for-nicaragua/#respond Sat, 02 Nov 2013 02:33:33 +0000 http://new.gemscanada.ca/?p=674 A container sent from our Langley depot early May recently arrived in Nicaragua.

The container took some time to be delivered as it was held up in customs. Near the end of July they were able to open the container and begin to distribute the material.

Pastor Emanuel Aguirre oversaw the distribution. With the help of Pastor Rivera and Pastor Madrigal they brought sewing machines to widows and single mothers, medical equipment to the Rehabilitation Hospital, and food and clothing to many poor people in and around the area of Managua.
